2 Strong Reasons to Start Drinking More Water BY MICHELLE THAMES

Most of us curly girls have always been taught that water is the enemy when it comes to our natural hair. I remember running from the rain with my freshly

relaxed hairstyle scared that any drop of water that touched my head would ruin my hairstyle. This may have been true when I was relaxed, but now water is actually my best friend when it comes to my natural hair. Drinking adequate amounts of water will help stimulate hair growth and hydrate your hair and your skin, and keep them thriving.

Water helps hair growth

We should be drinking up to eight glasses of water a day. I know that can be a struggle, especially if you sit at a desk for hours and have to use the restroom every minute. It’s worth it though, because our hair thrives on moisture, making water the best way to moisturize your hair from the inside out. Not drinking enough water can cause dehydration and can affect hair growth, which is something no curly girl wants to hear. Our bodies are composed of 60-80% water so when we don’t consume enough water to help sustain cell health and reproduction, our bodies become dehydrated. You can down hair vitamins and supplements like crazy, but if you are not consuming enough water on a daily basis the cells that promote hair growth will not be able to grow and reproduce and this, in turn, will make your hair very dry and brittle and lead to breakage. So in order to have that glamours glow year-round, it’s a must to drink enough water to keep your hair and skin hydrated!

Use water-based products

I have low porosity hair, meaning that my hair cuticles lay flat and tight, so they tend to resist moisture. It is very hard to penetrate the hair strand, so using water-based products is very important for me to keep my hair moisturized. When looking for hair products you want to look for products that list water as their first ingredient. Water-based products help to penetrate your hair shaft. A few water based moisturizers that I love are Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-In and Giovanni Direct Leave in Conditioner. Also, remember that oils do not moisturize your hair alone, they seal moisture into the hair, so to properly moisturize you need a water based leave-in and an oil to seal in the moisture. You can also use water alone with a hint of your favorite oil as a daily moisturizer to spruce up your hair daily.
