Winter hair shedding happens to most of us. Whether you live in the frozen North or Midwest U.S., or if your Winter is only moderately cooler and drier, any Winter seasonal change can affect your hair.
You can stop hair loss in the Winter by addressing the most common causes of winter hair shedding.STRESS
Winter seasonal hair shedding can be affected by the stress of the holidays. When we are busy planning holiday events for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, celebrating with family and co-workers, combined with a lack of sleep, over time it can impact the look and feel of your hair. During this busy time of year, plan 5 minutes out of every day to stop and do something for you. These 5 minutes are your time to regroup and take a breather from the holiday stress. This break just for you can be anything you enjoy — take your coffee to your favorite chair in the morning, read celebrity gossip online, or sit and meditate to quiet your thoughts and center yourself. You will feel calmer, healthier, and more able to deal with the holiday craziness. And your hair will thank you.
DRYNESS
One cause of shedding or thinning hair in winter is dryness. Your radiator and other central heat along with the dry wintry air outside can wreak havoc on your hair. Protect as much of your hair from the Winter air when outside. And though you’ve likely heard the recommendation to reduce shampooing to every other week, it’s important to keep your scalp clean to create the ideal environment for healthy hair growth. Use a gentle sulfate free shampoo that gently exfoliates and cleanses the scalp to remove debris and sebum. Then follow with a moisturizing conditioner or my favorite deep conditioner, SheaMoisture JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL STRENGTHEN, GROW & RESTORE TREATMENT MASQUE to nourish and soften dry hair.
Another tip for Winter hair care? Get regular haircuts. A trim every 3-5 months, depending on your hair, will help trim the dry, dull ends that weigh hair down. And shorter hair looks fuller and healthier.

HEALTH
During the Winter and the holidays, our diets usually suffer. We eat more holiday treats at parties and events, and more processed fast foods when out rushing to do holiday chores. Plus, for most of us, Winter means less selection of fruits and vegetables in our grocery store, and the fruits and veggies on offer are usually less fresh than in spring or summer. Poor diet can affect your hair. Nourish your strands by making an effort to eat more healthy hair foods during winter. Sit down to regular, complete meals that include marine proteins, dark leafy greens (for iron), nuts (for zinc) and red peppers (for vitamin C). Or try a drug free hair growth supplement that is clinically researched to nourish thinning hair from within.
