 Juneteenth may only be a year old as a federal holiday, but many African Americans have been commemorating and celebrating it for decades. There is no doubt that 19 June 1865 is a significant date in the timeline of American history – it meant an end to institutional slavery in Texas, the last hold-out state in the U.S.

It did not, however, mean an end to racial discrimination and much of that

discrimination has been aimed at Black hair, Afro hair, textured hair – call it what you will.

We have, slowly, begun to shake the stigma; to embrace our kinky, coily, and curly hair in all its glory and the natural hair movement has helped. It has encouraged so many of us to embark on our natural hair journeys, learning to love and care for our natural hair. All leading up to the much-welcomed Crown Act.
