The curls aren't always looser on the other side.
Sometimes it seems as though the grass is greener on the other side, in this case it may
seem like the curls are darn near close to perfect at the other salon. It can be so tempting to run to the hot new stylist, especially when she has a 10k following on Instagram. Now don't get me wrong that IG status is sometimes well-deserved, but what if it is a hoax? I am going to give you a list of questions that you need to seriously consider before changing your stylist. Why are you leaving?
If you feel like your hair is getting progressively worst then, by all means, hop on the first thing smoking. When you know more than your stylist on proper maintenance, you already know it's time to bust a move. If you don't know where to start searching for your new stylist a great place to start is NaturallyCurly's Salon Finder. Ideally, most people dream of a stylist that understands your goals and sets up a plan of action to get or keep your curls going strong. When there are constant setbacks that occur and are not addressed then you have a valid reason to seek out another stylist.
Have you done your research?
There is a lot to be said about getting online and really researching your new stylist. It is important to know which curl types they specialize in, every stylist doesn't understand YOUR hair. I have always said just because you are certified in certain larger brands doesn't make you great at it. It would take 3 days to tell you how many "BRAND" cuts I've seen gone wrong. Pay close attention to the pictures you see on social media, look at the curl types that are showcased. If the models featured don't look like you there may still be hope but, I would ask to see pictures of my curl pattern before I sacrifice my curls. Then again someone has to be the first, maybe it should be you.
Are you a serial chair hopper?
This may come as a surprise, but if you are always salon hopping, then how do you differentiate from the good and bad stylists? Stability is key when it comes to ensuring that your curls really have a chance to soak in what they are being fed. If there is no consistency on your part then how will you ever find your perfect hair regimen? Now there is a possibility that you have tried several salons and no one has lived up to your expectations. If that is your story refer back to the previous question and research a little more.
I may sound like a broken record, but who cares! Knowledge is power, take time to research products, shaping techniques, and proper maintenance for your curls.
When you understand the science behind your curls you will know what qualities to look for in a new stylist. Don't get caught up with Insta-glam -- remember that everything that glistens ain't healthy golden ringlets.
Drop the names of some awesome curl stylists or salons in the comments! And tell us what keeps you in their chair.
I will start by nominating DyeVerCity Salon in Augusta Ga (but of course, I'm being biased).
