NaturallyCurly kicked off NYFW with their Texture On The Runway event last week. I was looking forward to attending this event ever since I walked out of last
years runway show in February. The showcase, powered by Sally Beauty, celebrates the beauty of textured hair whether it’s kinky, curly, coily, wavy, loced or braided in a way that is fashion forward. The event was held in Gotham Hall, a grand venue that made me feel like royalty upon walking in. The hosts for the evening were NaturallyCurly’s Co-Founder, Michelle Breyer and co hosted by blogger MoKnowsHair.

I made my way up to the VIP reception where I grabbed red carpet interviews with bloggers MonroeSteele, AvielleAmor, Tylauren, EvelynfromtheInternets, and more!
Michelle Breyer started the Texture On The Runway showcase after covering fashion week for years and continuously being disappointed at the lack of diversity of any kind on the runway. She told Allure, “The most interesting styles were in the audience and the people covering it.” Frustration at the lack of diversity so irked Breyer that she decided to be the change she wanted to see and create her own runway event.

This year the Runway partners included Cantu Beauty, Carols Daughter, Creme of Nature, CurlFormers, and Mielle Organics, and SheaMoisture and let me tell you — they brought their A, B, and C game to the runway. I love that these brands are accessible to consumers – the people that are invited to the show. Yup, this event isn’t open to only bloggers and industry insiders.
With men sharing a space –albeit small –in the beauty aisle Cantu made a smashing addition to the show this year highlighting their Cantu Men collection on two chocolate brothers (I think they are twins!) sporting an afro and braids.
Our hearts literally melted when the adorable and hilarious McClure Twins hit the stage wearing afros adorned with braids and beads styled with Cantu Care for Kidsproducts.
Throughout the show the greatest range of textures and styles, there were waves, and curls, kinks and coils. I saw big voluminous afros, the curliest of curls, the most artistic form of braids one could create and luxurious gold updos and locs. It was truly a testament to the versatility and beauty of textured hair.
